Amman Arab University is organizing the first international conference of the Arab Council for Sustainable Development, under the patronage of the Secretary-General of the Arab Universities Union, at the end of August

Amman - Amman Arab University is hosting the first international conference of the Arab Council for Sustainable Development from August 29th to 30th, 2023. The conference, titled "The Role of Arab Universities as Catalysts for Sustainable Development: Reality and Aspirations," will take place on the campus of Amman Arab University under the auspices of His Excellency the Secretary-General of the Arab Universities Union, Professor Dr. Amr Ezzat Salama. The event is organized by the Arab Council for Sustainable Development at Amman Arab University. It aims to solidify the efforts of Arab universities in achieving sustainable development goals, enhancing the developmental role of universities for a better future for the upcoming generations. The conference seeks to establish a database in the field of sustainable development for the member Arab universities, propose an Arab classification for universities in the field of sustainable development, leverage global experiences in sustainable development, launch an Arab prize funded by the Arab League of Universities for sustainable development, showcase student projects related to sustainable development, and identify and diagnose the risks that hinder and obstruct sustainable development.

In this context, Acting President of the University, Professor Dr. Hassan Al-Zu'abi, stated that Amman Arab University has received approval from the Arab Universities Union to establish and localize a Sustainable Development Council emerging from the Union. This Council, headquartered at Amman Arab University, will become an active member within the educational institutions affiliated with the Union, aiming to achieve its objectives geared towards serving higher education in the Arab world and enhancing the performance level of those involved in higher education. Additionally, it will activate the developmental role of Arab higher education institutions and contribute to solidifying the concept of sustainable development and spreading the ethical commitment toward societal, environmental, and human responsibilities. The ultimate goal is to nurture a conscious generation that effectively fulfills its social and humanitarian tasks.

"Chairman of the Preparatory Committee, Professor Dr. Daher Al-Qurashi, stated that since the inception of the conference idea, a distinguished group of specialized researchers, both locally and internationally, were invited to participate in the conference proceedings. A total of (199) abstracts of research papers were received from Jordanian, Arab, and foreign researchers representing (20) countries. Additionally, (132) full research papers were received, which were then forwarded to an international scientific committee comprising university professors and experts from Arab and foreign backgrounds, known for their high competence, to assess the research papers according to international standards.

After subjecting these research papers to the assessment criteria, (108) well-founded research papers were accepted, while (24) research papers were rejected due to their non-compliance with the assessment criteria and conference objectives.

The conference addresses eight specialized themes in general and specific fields, which are as follows: the role of higher education institutions and Arab efforts in sustainable development areas, the gender equality and empowerment of women in sustainable development (gender) theme, the impact of climate change and natural resources on sustainable development and intergenerational continuity, the role of international agreements, legislation, policies, humanitarian security, and human rights in achieving sustainable development, the themes of cities, universities, and green business organizations, the innovation and modern technology theme, the economy and green energy, as well as research and developmental institutions supporting sustainable development, the risk management and sustainable development theme, and the theme of success stories and experiences of international organizations (local, regional, and global) in the realm of sustainable development.

The research papers will be discussed (both orally and visually) over the course of two days in auditoriums equipped with the latest educational tools within the university campus."
