
Amman Arab University (AAU) Holds Second Anti-Smoking Awareness Day
Under the patronage of Prof. Mohammad Al-Widyan, President of Amman Arab University, the Faculty of Pharmacy organized the university’s Second Anti-Smoking Awareness Day under the slogan “Towards a Smoke-Free Campus.”
The event was attended by Prof. Ismail Yamin, Assistant to the President for Academic Affairs; Prof. Rana Abu Hwaij, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Chair of the Supreme Anti-Smoking Committee; Dr. Bilal Abu Qadum, Dean of the Faculty of Sharia; Ms. Rawan Shahab from the King Hussein Cancer Center; as well as university faculty, staff, and students.
In his remarks, Prof. Yamin emphasized the university’s commitment to promoting a healthy campus culture and empowering students to adopt tobacco-free lifestyles. Prof. Abu Hwaij stressed the university’s leadership role in combating smoking through awareness programs, strict campus regulations, and the establishment of an on-campus smoking cessation clinic offering medical and psychological support.
She also warned against misleading marketing tactics by tobacco companies that target youth, and praised student engagement in programs held in collaboration with the King Hussein Cancer Center and the Association of Jordanian Universities for Tobacco and Smoking Control.
Dr. Abu Qudoom addressed the Islamic viewpoint, stating that smoking is religiously prohibited due to its harm to individuals and society.
The event featured a student competition focused on the dangers of smoking, showcasing the students’ knowledge and commitment to public health. The day concluded with an award ceremony for the winning team, reinforcing the university’s mission to foster a smoke-free, health-conscious academic environment.
