Al-Husban from Amman Arab University (AAU) Concludes Regional Training Program to Promote and Protect Human Rights
Demonstrating Amman Arab University's commitment to enhancing the competency of its faculty members, Mr. Farhan Al-Husban , a faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences, participated in a regional training program on the "Role of Young Defenders in Promoting and Protecting Human Rights." The program was organized by the United Nations Training and Documentation Centre in the Field of Human Rights for South-West Asia and the Arab Region (UNHRC) and consisted of three online training courses.
These training courses aimed to enhance the capabilities of young defenders in engaging with international human rights mechanisms, monitoring, and advocacy. Additionally, they sought to strengthen the capacity of young human rights defenders in the Arab region to interact with UN human rights bodies and mechanisms. The program, which ran from April to August 2025, focused on qualifying participants in three key stages.
The first stage aimed to enhance interaction with UN mechanisms, enabling participants to effectively engage with UN bodies and mechanisms concerned with human rights. These mechanisms included specialized committees and Special Procedures mandate holders who monitor human rights situations in various countries, with the goal of providing participants with the necessary knowledge to amplify their voices and contribute to efforts for change. The second stage centered on developing participants' skills in monitoring and documenting human rights violations and preparing reliable reports that comply with UN international standards. This ensures that information and data related to violations are accurate and trustworthy, thereby strengthening the advocacy and arguments presented before international bodies.
The third stage focused on monitoring violations and enhancing defenders' skills in observing and documenting human rights abuses. This included developing the ability to collect evidence, document testimonies, and analyze data in a systematic and organized manner, aiming to bolster their capacity to defend the rights of individuals and communities in an increasingly complex context.
In this regard, Al-Husban stated: "The regional training program was a significant and exceptional experience in the field of human rights, bringing together defenders from over 12 Arab countries with diverse expertise. The training was highly interactive; over the three stages, we focused on UN mechanisms and familiarized ourselves with various monitoring tools, as well as the principles and strategies of advocacy, illustrated with key examples from our Arab region."
It is noteworthy that the training program included 24 male and female human rights defenders from 12 Arab countries. Mr. Al-Husban 's participation underscores the important role of academics in driving change towards a more just and equitable society.
